Been kinda dead…catching up!
This is not good. I mean, I’m all for letting the guys have whatever underwear they want. But the fact that someone is getting underwear into Guantanamo Bay without being noticed means that there are ways to get other things in without being noticed. And that could be BAD.
A real ass…in a hole… I’m not sure how that poor thing managed to fall in the hole without breaking all of its legs…
I’d never thought about this, really. I mean, you think of WW1 and WW2 as these huge losses of life and whatever else. But I never thought of the *women* who were left behind, but still expected to be married after the war. That must have been awful, knowing your family (and society) expected you to get married, but there just flat out weren’t enough men to go around.
OK, folks. Youth football is supposed to be a fun way for them to get exercise, learn sportsmanship, work as a team, have fun!! Having your father be so psychotic about the fact that you’re not playing as much as he’d like that he gets freaking arrested does not help anything. CHILL OUT, people!
The last class out of Pensacola is graduating this Friday. I’m fairly certain a friend of mine is in the class. Well done, folks!
This is a good idea. Having a way for countries to get nuclear fuel (and dispose of waste) without needing their own facilities will help a lot of countries out. The big idea is, of course, to reduce the changes of proliferation. And hopefully it will, although I can’t blame countries for wanting the technology. Plus, you get engineers together and they’re bound to want to see if they can do it, too.
A couple of really interesting articles on responses to the Petraeus report, mostly from military guys and students at the U.S. Army’s Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth. This one is very interesting, and includes statements from people who are retired and can make them. It also includes a discussion on the necessity of getting public support, and that it’s the government’s responsibility to get that support, rather than the military. And then this one has some discussion from the College, where they can use quotes as long as there are no names involved. It’s still VERY interesting…
Optical Illusions. Warning: This will make your brain hurt!
Pictures of Iranians on 9/11/01. And a painting. It’s really beautiful, actually.
This is such a great idea. Bring in national revenue by renting out your domain name. And it brought in enough money to actually bring computers and (although slow) internet to the island. Sounds like a good deal to me!
This is a picture of a certain well-known political couple waaaay back in the day. They totally look like hippies. It’s awesome.
OK, if you’re going to defend creationism using math, you should at least check your math. I find this hilarious because they’re using something TOTALLY WRONG to convey their message. Believe it or not, it does NOT take all of the paper in the world to write a number with a few hundred digits…
OK, this seems like a really, really dumb thing to do. You can contemplate what it might come to, if Iran keeps enriching. You can threaten with sanctions (I mean, France would even have buddies there). But don’t use the “war” word. That just gets everybody excited. It’s like being in a standoff with something venomous and poisonous and staring…staring…staring…threaten it with a stick!
OK, this is really freaking me out. For once, I’m on Microsoft’s side. There is definitely a limit to where antitrust ends and corporate secrets begins. And this is shifting that border into forcing companies to reveal information that should be in the secrets realm.
So, I’ve no idea if this is a real story or not, as it’s just someone’s blog. However, it’s interesting to think about. It would not have occurred to me to think too much about that. After they didn’t care I was carrying on a radiation detector, I’ve been pretty nonchalant about my electronics…
OK, I don’t think this is going to help ANYTHING. I would suspect that people shooting off rockets in Gaza are relying on the power Israel provides to do it. The people that are going to feel the lack of power are all the people who just want decent living conditions and not to get segregated or killed or anything.
And this is continuing to be psychotic. Apparently, when Nowak (the crazy astronaut) drove across the country, she wasn’t wearing astronaut diapers. Instead, she was using some of her daughter’s (?) old, unused diapers that were still laying around. They wanted to clear that up. Although I’m not sure how that makes anything better…
So, one of the things the AJC has been doing an investigative segment into has been the Georgia mental health system. There aren’t enough beds or staff, and some of the staff that is there isn’t doing a thorough job. Another big problem is that when someone is arrested and determined to be mentally ill, they’re supposed to be evaluated and taken to a facility for treatment. And there’s just not room. This OpEd in the AJC takes the stance that more beds are required. Which is true, given that there aren’t near enough right now. On the other hand, this one talks about the necessity of getting these people help before they’ve gotten to the point where they’re in jail. I think both have merit - we’ve got to deal with the situation as it exists now, but we also need to prevent as much as possible. But that will take time, and we definitely need the beds for the short term.
So, the day the earth stood still was when I started agreeing with Bob Barr. This was quite a while ago. Apparently, somewhere along the line, he mellowed and became this awesome (and libertarian, now) voice of reason. This one is about the “Quality of Life” units - these are the folks who go around and make sure you don’t accidentally have too many people living in your house, and end up working with the smaller crimes. They’re the ones who label middle school kids who pop each other in the butt as sex offenders and charge high school students with pocket knives in their cars with felonies.
Mostly, this just makes me twitch, and then want to go find a nice Canadian rock to hide under. I kind of feel like habeas corpus is one of those things that makes us a free nation. As opposed to heading towards fascism. And the fact that this many of our elected senators don’t feel the same way worries me. Chambliss didn’t vote, but Isaakson will be getting an angry letter.
I found this very interesting. It’s like postsecret, except lolcats style…
And this is just unbelievably cool. They’ve worked out a method to use x-ray to read rolled up parchment. So now we can get the rest of the Torah and the Dead Sea Scrolls and who knows what other really freaking cool stuff??
And, finally, a beautiful picture of Hong Kong at that edge just between sunset and night.
